EDENTON, NC – The Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plain League announce today that outfielders Michael Camporeale and Jason Kanzler along with first baseman Spencer Branigan have been selected to participate in the 2012 Coastal Plain League Home Run Derby for the National side.

Kanzler, out of the University at Buffalo, has nine career home runs for the Bulls including eight this spring while batting .345 and slugging .556. For the Steamers, Kanzler has hit seven homers, tying him for the league lead with his fellow teammates and all-star selections Camporeale and Branigan. Kanzler will lead off the home run derby for the National side.

Branigan, from the University of Pennsylvania, batted .248 and hit two home runs as captain of the Quakers this spring. This summer has seen Branigan break out, batting .296 for Edenton and connecting for seven home runs while slugging .520, good for fourth in the league. Branigan also sits atop the leader board in home runs in the CPL and he will hit third for the National team. Branigan has hit 10 home runs in his career at Pennsylvania and his seven this summer match the most in a single collegiate season for the lefty.

Camporeale, from the University of Washington, hit .270 for the Huskies and added four home runs this past spring. In Camporeale’s collegiate career he has 15 homers, including 11 in two seasons with Cuesta College in California. For the Steamers this summer he is hitting .333 with seven long balls, which also ties him for the league lead, and his slugging percentage is a team- and league-leading .595. Camporeale will hit fifth for the national squad.

The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 53 alums – including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander – make their Major League debut thus far.
