The Edenton Steamers proudly celebrated their 20th Anniversary season as a member of the Coastal Plain League in 2017. With the exciting campaign ahead, the organization put together the 20th Anniversary All-Franchise Team. This group is comprised of some of the top players and coaches to ever put on the Teal and Black based on their time in Edenton. Here are the best of the Clams at each spot.
Manager: Bryan Hill
Hill managed the Steamers club from 2013-2016. The Chowan University (NC) assistant coach/recruiting coordinator posted a 144-68 (.679) cumulative regular-season mark. Hill also had a 9-7 career playoff record, which included the 2015 Petitt Cup when the Steamers were also recognized as Perfect Game CrossChecker Summer Collegiate Team of the Year. He managed one of the CPL all-star teams three straight years from 2013-2015. Hill also managed the inaugural CPL Select Team in 2015 against Team USA. He was also individually recognized as CPL Coach of the Year in both 2013 and 2015.
Starting Pitcher: Chris Spigner
Chis Spigner was a member of the 1999 Edenton Steamers team. The University of South Carolina product had a 6-1 record, 1.67 ERA and 35 hits allowed in 67 innings pitched. He also set a franchise single-season record of 85 strikeouts. Spigner played professionally from 2002-2004 in independent league baseball.
Starting Pitcher: Whitley Benson
Whitley Benson was a member of the 2001 Teal and Black. The pitcher from University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill had 84 innings pitched and 12 starts, which are both franchise single-season records. He tossed three complete games and one shutout with the Steamers. Benson posted a 2.25 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, .226 batting average against with 76 strikeouts and only 17 walks.
Starting Pitcher: Danny Powers
Danny Powers was a member of the 2004 CPL champion Edenton Steamers. The University of Central Missouri product made seven appearances and six starts in 42 innings pitched. He had a 5-2 record while posting a 1.29 ERA and .86 WHIP with a .204 batting average against. Powers had an absurd tally of 51 strikeouts to just three walks. This ratio is a single-season franchise record by a starter. He was picked by the Minnesota Twins in the eighth round of the 2005 Draft and pitched three seasons in their system. Powers reached the AA affiliate before finishing his career with the River City Rascals in 2008 in the independent Frontier League.
Starting Pitcher: Zach Prendergast
Zach Prendergast was a member of the 2015 Petitt Cup Champion Edenton squad. From Seton Hall University (NJ), he had eight appearances, all starts, and 46 innings pitched. He posted a 6-0 record with just a 1.17 ERA. He also had 46 strikeouts to just nine walks and a .162 average against. Like many on this list, Prendergast set a franchise-single season record by having a .74 WHIP as a starter. He was named the 2015 CPL Pitcher of the Year.
Pitcher: Coleman McKellar
Coleman McKellar was a member of the Steamers from 2005-2007. He bounced around at different colleges, having performed for Chattanooga State Technical College (TN), Francis Marion University (SC) and Angelo State University (TX). For the Steamers, McKellar appeared 36 times with 17 starts. He pitched 143.1 innings and posted a 15-3 record and 1.20 WHIP. His innings and win totals are believed to be Coastal Plain League career standards. McKellar’s seven wins in 2005 place him in a tie for the most franchise wins in a single season.
Pitcher: Evan Scribner
Evan Scribner played for the Teal and Black during the 2006 season. The Central Connecticut State University product had 11 appearances, six starts and 46.1 innings pitched. Scribner posted a 6-1 record, 1.17 ERA and .84 WHIP. He had 50 strikeouts to just eight walks while opponents had a .190 average against and a .209 slugging mark. Scribner went on to be drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 28th round in 2007. He has been a Major Leaguer since 2011, where he has pitched in relief for the San Diego Padres, Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners. In 161.2 career innings, he boasts a 1.09 WHIP, 3.84 ERA and 149 strikeouts to just 29 bases on balls entering the 2017 Major League season.
Relief Pitcher: Edgar Ramírez
Edgar Ramírez wore a Steamer uniform during the 2004 championship season while spending his college years at Florida International University and Louisiana State University. Ramírez had 20 appearances and 21.2 innings pitched. He totaled nine saves, a .55 WHIP, .123 batting average against and 30 strikeouts to three walks. The strikeout-to-walk ratio is a franchise single-season record for a reliever. Ramírez was drafted in the 36th round in 2006 by the New York Mets and pitched seven seasons in their system, reaching as high as AAA.
Relief Pitcher: Coty Saranthus
Coty Saranthus spent a summer with the Steamers during the 2010 season. The Delta State University (MS) product appeared 30 times with 53 innings pitched. He boasted a 7-0 record with one save, .51 WHIP and 0.68 ERA. He also notched 59 strikeouts to nine walks and held opposing hitters to a .136 batting average. The arm-angle reliever was recognized as the 2010 CPL Pitcher of the Year. The WHIP and batting average against are franchise single-season bests for a reliever; and the wins tie for the most in a single summer by a Steamers hurler. Saranthus pitched one season professionally in the independent Frontier League for the Evansville Otters in 2013.
Relief Pitcher: Jordan Egan
Jordan Egan was a member of the Steamer organization from 2011-2012. From Norfolk State University (VA), Egan appeared 53 times, making one start, over 65 innings pitched. He posted a 6-3 record and 16 saves, including 15 in 2012 when he tied the franchise single-season mark and won Gieseke Gold honors. Along with the record-tying performance, he boasted a 1.15 WHIP, 1.94 ERA, .176 batting average against and 69 strikeouts.
Catcher: Bucky Strickland
Bucky Strickland suited up for the Steamers during the 2005 and 2006 campaigns. The Chattanooga State Technical College (TN) and Angelo State University (TX) product played in 71 games including 65 starts. Strickland hit .274 with eight doubles and four homers in 226 at bats. He also posted a .991 fielding average and threw out 27.3 percent of opposing base-stealers. He was also previously named as the catcher on the CPL All-Decade Team.
First Base: Chad Sedio
Chad Sedio was another member of the 2015 Petitt Cup Champion Edenton Steamers. From Miami University of Ohio, he also played third base and the outfield along with first base. Sedio put together the greatest offensive performance in CPL history when he slashed .403/.465/.769/1.234 in 186 AB with 18 doubles and 16 home runs along with 49 RBI. The slugging average, OPS, and total bases (143) all shattered single-season league standards. He also set franchise marks in batting average and RBI. Sedio concluded the summer with Gieseke Gold honors, CPL Offensive Player of the Year and was a Perfect Game CrossChecker Summer All-American. The Detroit Tigers made him their 27th-round selection in 2016, splitting time between Rookie ball and short A.
Second Base: Joey Wendle
Joey Wendle played for the 2011 Edenton Steamers. The West Chester University (PA) product slashed .377/.448/.507/.955 in 215 AB with 12 doubles, two triples and four homers. He also drew 24 walks to just 14 strikeouts and posted a .973 fielding average and 5.22 range factor in the field. He further added a single-season league record of 81 hits, set franchise single-season marks for assists by a second baseman (158) and fashioned a 21-game hitting streak. Wendle won the Gieseke Gold Award for the Steamers in 2011, while also being named the 2B on the 2011 Perfect Game CrossChecker Summer All-American Team. Wendle was selected in the sixth round, making him the highest-drafted position player in Steamers history, by the Cleveland Indians in 2012 and made his Major League debut in 2016 with the Oakland Athletics, hitting .260 in 96 at bats.
Shortstop: Evan Rogers
Evan Rogers played two seasons with the Steamers in 2014 and 2015 and was a CPL all-star in both. The Mars Hill University (NC) product slashed .289/.410/.421/.831 in 363 at bats with 22 doubles, one triple, eight homers and 71 bases on balls. He also swiped 33 bags in 38 tries and posted a franchise-record .956 fielding average at short. Rogers won the Goodman Glove award in 2014 and the Ebersole Heart & Soul Award for the Steamers in 2015. The Philadelphia Phillies signed him as a post-draft free agent in 2016 when he split time between their Rookie and short A affiliates.
Third Base: Josh Hampton
Josh Hampton was a member of the 2013 edition of the Edenton Steamers. The Wilmington University (DE) product produced hitting marks of .313/.395/.564/.959 with 10 doubles, four triples and nine homers and also drove in 42 and stole 10 bases. Defensively, Hampton set the team record for assists by a third sacker (123), posted a .953 fielding average and 3.62 range factor at the hot corner. He played briefly in the independent Can-Am League.
Outfield: Michael Camporeale
He was a member of the 2012 Steamers. The University of Washington product won CPL Offensive Player of the Year after putting up .340/.388/.623/1.011 averages with 19 doubles, nine homers and 11 stolen bags.
Outfield: Brett Nommensen
Brett Nommensen played for the Teal and Black during the 2008 campaign. From Eastern Illinois University, he played an outstanding defensive centerfield to complement his offensive production of .377/.462/.522/.984 in 159 at bats with 11 doubles, four homers, 20 walks to 23 strikeouts along with 17 steals. Nommensen was selected in the eighth round the next year by the Tampa Bay Rays and played five seasons in their farm system, reaching as high as AA.
Outfield: Nick Thompson
Nick Thompson was a member of the Steamers during the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Thompson played his college ball at East Carolina University (NC) and the College of William & Mary (VA) and also played second base along with his outfield role in Edenton. In 157 career at bats for the Teal and Black he posted a slash line of .312/.467/.592/1.059 with 11 doubles, three triples, nine homers and 41 bases on balls to 31 strikeouts. Thompson signed in the eighth round with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2014 and reached AA in 2016 before voluntarily retiring to attend medical school.
Outfield: Tony Rosselli
Tony Rosselli was another two-year presence on an Edenton roster from 2015 to 2016. Currently finishing up his college career as a senior at Indiana State University, he logged huge numbers in the CPL. A slash line of .293/.378/.545/.923 was complemented by 79 career runs scored and 74 career RBI. His 24 home runs also stand as a career record in the modern Coastal Plain League. Rosselli was a member of the 2015 squad, which won the Petitt Cup and was recognized by Perfect Game CrossChecker as the Summer Collegiate Team of the Year. He also won Edenton’s Goodman Glove Award that summer for his stellar defense in right field.
Designated Hitter: Doug Kroll
Doug Kroll spent two summers with the Clams in 2008 and 2009. He played his college ball at Iowa Western College and then finished his career at Oklahoma State University and Lubbock Christian University (TX). Kroll was the most prolific hitter in Steamers franchise history before Nick Thompson and Chad Sedio recently emerged. He amassed 235 career at bats in the Teal and Black, posting a gaudy slash line of .370/.453/.591/1.042 with 12 doubles and 12 homers.
ONSL
